Word of Mouth – The Heart of Salento’s Business Community
Salento, the beautiful southern peninsula of Puglia, Italy, is a region rich in history, culture, traditions, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit. But behind its picturesque towns, stunning coastlines, and welcoming communities lies an economic reality that deserves more attention.
Unlike the industrial regions of Northern Italy, Salento relies heavily on small businesses, local services, agriculture, craftsmanship, and tourism. Over the years, the region has faced considerable economic challenges, including the devastating loss of millions of olive trees caused by the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium. This has affected not only olive growers but also countless families, businesses, and industries connected to agriculture.
Yet Salento has something extraordinary: its people.
“Since arriving in Salento in February 2025, I have been amazed by the sheer number of small businesses operating throughout the region,” says Frank Amptmeijer, founder of DutchWriter Media and the driving force behind SalentoABC.
“Thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of entrepreneurs are working incredibly hard every day. Some work alone, others employ just one or two people. They are excellent at what they do, but promoting their businesses is often a completely different story.”
Traditionally, Salento’s business community has relied heavily on word-of-mouth recommendations. A trusted neighbor recommends an electrician. A friend introduces you to a local accountant. Someone at the bar knows a reliable plumber, carpenter, or gardener.
And there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, word of mouth is one of the most powerful forms of advertising in the world.
But times are changing.
Today, almost everyone carries a smartphone. Potential customers discover businesses through Google, Facebook, Instagram, and other digital platforms. An online presence is no longer a luxury reserved for larger companies. It has become an essential part of doing business.
However, maintaining that presence requires something many small business owners simply do not have: time.
Creating content, uploading photographs, responding to messages, maintaining a website, and running advertising campaigns require daily attention and consistency.
Most entrepreneurs would rather concentrate on doing what they do best.
And that is precisely where SalentoABC comes in.
SalentoABC – Bringing Communities Back Together
SalentoABC is an ambitious regional digital platform developed by DutchWriter Media, headquartered in Parabita, in the heart of Salento.
Our mission is simple: connect local communities, strengthen small businesses, encourage cooperation, and make Salento’s entrepreneurs more visible to the people who need them.
We believe that economic growth does not always begin with large corporations, international investors, or expensive marketing campaigns.
Sometimes it begins with an electrician meeting a restaurant owner. A local bakery discovering a nearby supplier. A young professional finding their first job. Or a homeowner discovering a reliable tradesperson just around the corner.
SalentoABC aims to make those connections easier, faster, and more accessible.
And we want to achieve this without making participation expensive or complicated.
Our Core Values – Stronger Together

The philosophy behind SalentoABC is built around accessibility, visibility, cooperation, and community.
We want thousands of local businesses to become part of one interconnected regional network.
Business owners can create a basic presence on SalentoABC free of charge, while more comprehensive promotional opportunities are available through affordable subscriptions costing just a few cents per day. For approximately one euro per week, businesses can access the platform’s broader promotional features.
Our objective is not to charge entrepreneurs substantial fees simply to become visible.
Our objective is to bring as many businesses together as possible.
Imagine thousands of local companies, each with its own business page, all connected through one regional platform.
Individually, these businesses may have limited marketing budgets. Collectively, however, they can become part of something much more powerful.
Behind the scenes, SalentoABC intends to actively promote the platform through Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram, and other relevant advertising channels.
This creates an interesting opportunity.
When someone discovers SalentoABC through an advertisement for a local restaurant, they might also discover a nearby bakery, a holiday accommodation, a bicycle rental company, or a local event.
The visibility generated by one business can create opportunities for others.
As we like to say, when it rains at your neighbor’s place, a few drops may fall at yours too.
That is the spirit behind SalentoABC.
We are not trying to replace traditional word-of-mouth recommendations. We want to bring that same spirit of trust, familiarity, and cooperation into the digital world.
1. Business Listings – Putting Local Entrepreneurs on the Map
The foundation of SalentoABC is its regional business directory.
From family-owned restaurants and independent retailers to accountants, craftsmen, professional consultants, accommodation providers, and tourism businesses, we want to give entrepreneurs throughout Salento an accessible place to present themselves.
Our ambition is to build a comprehensive directory containing thousands of local businesses, organized by location, business category, and the services they provide.
Visitors will be able to explore businesses on interactive maps, discover nearby companies, and find relevant contact information without navigating through countless unrelated search results.
For business owners, the benefits are straightforward: better visibility, easier discovery, and more opportunities to connect with customers and other entrepreneurs.
For residents and visitors, it means discovering the remarkable variety of businesses that Salento has to offer.
And for the region as a whole, it means creating a digital network that brings communities closer together.
2. The SalentoABC Job Portal – Connecting Employers and Jobseekers
Finding a suitable job or recruiting the right person is not always easy, particularly in a region where many employment opportunities are advertised informally.
As of October 2026, we are developing a dedicated regional job portal to help address this challenge.
The concept is straightforward.

Employers will be able to advertise available positions, while jobseekers can explore employment opportunities throughout Salento.
Whether someone is unemployed, currently receiving social benefits, entering the workforce for the first time, or simply looking for a new professional challenge, the portal aims to provide a convenient starting point.
Likewise, a restaurant looking for additional staff, a construction business searching for an experienced tradesperson, or a professional office recruiting a new employee will have a regional platform dedicated to connecting employers with potential candidates.
We believe there may be hundreds, perhaps thousands, of opportunities across Salento that currently receive limited public exposure.
By bringing job advertisements together in one accessible location, we hope to make the regional employment market more transparent and easier to navigate.
Our long-term ambition is to create a valuable employment resource for both businesses and residents.
3. The Services Portal – Finding the Right People Close to Home
Almost every household and business requires professional assistance from time to time.
Perhaps you need an electrician to repair a faulty connection, a plumber to fix a leaking pipe, or a painter to refresh your home.
Maybe you are renovating a property and need a tiler, carpenter, gardener, or building contractor.
Or perhaps you are elderly and need someone with a suitable vehicle to collect unwanted furniture or transport something too heavy to manage yourself.
Finding the right person should not be complicated.
That is why the third major component of SalentoABC is our local services portal.
The aim is to help residents, homeowners, businesses, and visitors identify relevant service providers in their immediate surroundings.
Through clearly organized categories, business profiles, contact information, and interactive maps, users will be able to discover professionals operating in their area.
Instead of searching through numerous websites, social media groups, and outdated listings, visitors can use SalentoABC as a convenient regional starting point.
For service providers, this creates another opportunity to become visible to potential customers who might otherwise never discover them.
Local services, local people, and local opportunities.
4. SalentoABC Business Meetings – Come as Neighbors, Leave as Friends
Technology can connect people, but we believe nothing replaces meeting someone face to face.
That is why SalentoABC is planning something that goes beyond websites, directories, and digital marketing.
Starting, we hope, in November 2026, we intend to organize informal business community meetings throughout Salento.
And these meetings will be a little different from traditional networking events.
There will be no presentations, no membership requirements, no entry fees, and absolutely no pressure to sell anything.
In fact, we would prefer that you leave your sales pitch at home.
Simply come along, meet your neighbors, enjoy a conversation, and perhaps make a new friend.
Imagine our first gathering at a friendly local bar in Parabita, where SalentoABC is headquartered.
We invite the local baker, accountant, insurance adviser, restaurant owner, plumber, electrician, shopkeeper, graphic designer, and anyone else running a business in the surrounding community.
Everyone is welcome.
You pay for whatever you choose to drink, whether that is a coffee, mineral water, or a beer. SalentoABC does not charge an attendance fee.
We simply provide the opportunity for people to meet.
The gatherings will be short and informal, typically lasting between 45 minutes and one hour. Afterward, everyone is welcome to stay longer, continue conversations, or return to their day.
Our ambition is to organize one meeting somewhere in Salento every week, rotating between different towns and communities.
Parabita, Lecce, Porto Cesareo, Tricase, and many other locations could become regular meeting places.
With a rotating schedule, we hope to return to participating areas approximately every eight weeks.
Why are we doing this?
Because local entrepreneurs need one another.
The restaurant owner might need an electrician. The electrician might need an accountant. The accountant might want a new website. The web designer might know someone looking for a good restaurant.
These connections happen naturally when people know each other.
But that does not mean anyone should attend with the intention of selling services to everyone in the room.
Quite the opposite.
We want people to enjoy one another’s company, exchange stories, share a laugh, and rediscover the pleasure of being part of a local business community.
Business opportunities can develop naturally afterward.
Come with a friendly smile. Leave with a few new friends. That is all we ask.
More Than a Business Directory – A Platform for Salento’s Future
SalentoABC is not intended to become just another online directory.
It is a long-term initiative built around a broader vision of regional cooperation.
We want to make it easier for local businesses to discover one another, for consumers to support nearby entrepreneurs, for employers to reach jobseekers, and for residents to find reliable services.

Tourism is equally important to this vision. Visitors arriving in Salento should be able to discover not only its famous beaches and historic towns but also the independent businesses, local experiences, restaurants, craftspeople, and communities that make the region so special.
By bringing these different elements together, SalentoABC aims to support both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) relationships while encouraging stronger connections between residents and visitors.
We understand that building such a network takes time.
It requires trust, participation, consistency, and the willingness of local entrepreneurs to support a shared initiative.
But if thousands of small businesses begin working together, even informally, the combined effect could be remarkable.
One business alone may have a limited reach.
Thousands of connected businesses have the potential to become a powerful regional community.
A Personal Invitation from DutchWriter Media
“Since moving to Salento, I have discovered a region filled with hardworking, creative, and wonderfully welcoming people,” says Frank Amptmeijer.
“What strikes me most is how much potential exists here. There are so many talented entrepreneurs, often operating within a few kilometers of one another, who have never met. Imagine what could happen if we brought them together.”
“SalentoABC is our contribution to making that happen. We are not pretending that a website will solve all the region’s economic challenges. But we believe that helping people find one another, support one another, and do business together is a meaningful place to start.”
“And if we can do that while strengthening the wonderful sense of community that makes Salento special, then we will have achieved something worthwhile.”
